ナチ占領下のフランス。田舎町の学校で働くバルニーは、娘の洗礼を機に宗教への興味が湧き教会へ出向く。相手をしてくれたのは若く情熱的で勉強家のモラン神父。ユダヤ系フランス人である彼女は無神論者だったが、モランの話を聞いている内にキリスト教の教義に心惹かれ、やがてふたりの間には仄かな愛情が…。
